Rupee gains 18 paise against dollar on strong local equities

Mumbai: Snapping two days of losses, the rupee gained 18 paise on Wednesday to close the day at 44.52/53 against the US currency in line with a smart recovery in local equities despite fresh capital outflow.
At the Interbank Foreign Exchange (Forex) market, the local unit opened strong at 44.57/58.
Later, it bounced back to settle the day at 44.52/53, a net rise of 0.40 per cent.
Exporters and some banks preferred to reduce their dollar position in view of uncertainty in the currency market, forex dealers said.
Fall in the US currency overseas aided the rupee rise, they added.
Alpari Financial Services (India) CEO Pramit Brahmbhatt said, “Rupee traded strong for the day, taking cues from global markets where dollar traded weak against major currencies. Indian equity markets also ended up by one per cent which strengthened the rupee further.”
“Recovery in equity market aided the rupee rise. Yesterday’s Chinese data had indicated robust GDP growth, which helped to lift the commodity prices and the European shares. All these factors encouraged the rupee to appreciate today,” said India Forex Advisors CEO Abhishek Goenka.
The dollar index, consisting of six major currencies, was down by about 0.3 per cent and New York crude oil was trading near $ 97.5 a barrel in the European market on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex on Wednesday finished higher by over 184 points or 1.0 per cent.
Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs), after pumping in $ 2.68 billion since June 23, sold shares worth $ 205.28 billion yesterday as per SEBI data.

Three Bomb Blasts in Dadar, Opera House and Zaveri Bazar 13th July 2011
Three almost simultaneous blasts rocked three different locations in India's financial capital of Mumbai during evening rush hour today, killing at least three people, police said.
Police did not want to speculate on the nature of the blasts, two of which were in south Mumbai, while the third was in the centre of the coastal city. All three locations are crowded parts of the city, especially during rush hour.
India has remained jittery about the threat of militant strikes, especially since the Mumbai attacks in November 2008 which killed 166 people and raised tensions with arch rival Pakistan.
Television footage from CNN-IBN television channel showed some debris at one suspected blast site.
Police said at least 25 people were wounded.
A home ministry spokesman said it was too early to comment on the nature of the blasts.
"We were inside our office when we heard a huge noise. Outside there was a lot of commotion, we can see fire trucks are here and they have taken away two or three bodies," Jasraj Jain, a witness, told CNN-IBN television.
The popular Opera House area and Zaveri Bazaar in south Mumbai were where two of the blast occurred. The third blast was in Dadar, which is in the centre of the city.
New Delhi says Pakistan-based groups aid and train militants to carry out attacks against India, a claim Islamabad rejects.
Home-grown militant groups are also active in the country and have in the past few years carried out attacks in large cities.]

In Delhi, the Home Ministry has confirmed that this was a terrorist attack and Mumbai has been sealed and is on high alert. Mr Chidambaram said his ministry would make a statement every two hours or sooner. The next statement will be made at 11 pm today. (Watch: A coordinated attack by terrorists, says Chidambaram)
Mumbai Police sources say the Indian Mujahideen is suspected to be behind the attack. Union Home Ministry sources too say that the hand of the IM working closely with the Lashkar e Taiba is suspected. (Read)
Two members of the IM were arrested in Maharashtra yesterday by the Maharashtra Anti-Terror Squad. However, sources confirm there was no intelligence alert or input that warned of today's terror attack.
Mr Chavan said the blast at Opera House was of the highest intensity.

The Dadar West explosion took place in a meter box on an electric pole near a bus stop.The Opera House blast took place at Prasad Chamber building.

There were also unconfirmed reports of an unexploded bomb being found in Dadar and a bomb hoax in Santacruz.
Early reports said a police control room had received a call claiming that there were serial blasts in Mumbai.
A National Investigation Agency (NIA) Team has rushed to Mumbai from Delhi to investigate. A National Security Guards (NSG) team and forensic experts have also been airlifted on a BSF plane and are bound for Mumbai. The police have appealed for calm.
Zaveri Bazaar has been hit before - over 50 people were killed in twin blasts in 2002.
Malls, markets and other crowded places in Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad and Bangalore are on high alert.(Read)

Ed.CET was conducted in 5 subject contents namely Mathematics, Physical Science, Biological Science, Social Studies, and English. Ed.CET is for admissions to B.Ed colleges across the State. 1,92,389 students have qualified in 1,97,420 students appeared for the exam. In qualifiers, 1,04,866 are women candidates and 87,523 are men. 65,000 seats are available in 615 B.Ed colleges in the Andhra pradesh State and another 2 more new B.Ed colleges are expected to get approval from NCET.

Web-based counselling for engineering admissions 2011 from the third week of July and online counselling for MBBS and BDS courses will start from July 17. AICTE granted 7 new engineering colleges this year to the state with an intake of 2,100 seats. Now the state has 2,69,175 seats in 707 colleges, an additional 25,000 seats in the existing engineering colleges are expected to be approved due to increase in intake. A total of 2,07,252 students have qualified in the engineering stream and 52,510 have qualified in the medical stream after the Eamcet ranks were announced.
The engineering seats in the state are expected to cross the 3 lakh mark this year. Officials decided to follow a cut-off date of June 30 to include seats in the counselling. Any approvals given by AICTE after the cut-off date will not be considered for admissions this year and will be taken up only in the next academic year. The classes for first year engineering students will begin from August 16(Is it possible???). There will be no change in the fees(Thanks) for engineering courses this year as the AFRC has decided to retain the existing fee structure for professional courses.
Eamcet qualifiers 2,59,753 this year, as 17,478 failed the Intermediate exams even qualifying in Eamcet. Originally, 2,78,852 students had qualified in Eamcet, when the marks were announced on June 8. Of them, 14,497 students in the engineering stream and 2,981 students in the medical stream have failed the Intermediate exams this year.
The engineering seats in the state are expected to cross the 3 lakh mark this year. Officials decided to follow a cut-off date of June 30 to include seats in the counselling. Any approvals given by AICTE after the cut-off date will not be considered for admissions this year and will be taken up only in the next academic year. The classes for first year engineering students will begin from August 16(Is it possible???). There will be no change in the fees(Thanks) for engineering courses this year as the AFRC has decided to retain the existing fee structure for professional courses.
Eamcet qualifiers 2,59,753 this year, as 17,478 failed the Intermediate exams even qualifying in Eamcet. Originally, 2,78,852 students had qualified in Eamcet, when the marks were announced on June 8. Of them, 14,497 students in the engineering stream and 2,981 students in the medical stream have failed the Intermediate exams this year.

Qualified Candidates of ECET-2011 B.Sc.Graduates & Diploma Holders) are informed that admissions into University and Private Engineering Colleges will be conducted based on Web Counseling Procedure. In this process, Candidates have to appear for Certificates Verification in any one of the Help Line Centers listed below and exercise their options through internet available at their from internet. Based on the options exercised, allotments will be made considering the local area, gender, category and special reservation category and allotment will be placed in the web and candidates have to download the allotment order and remit the Counseling fee and tuition fee in any one of the Branches of Indian Bank in the state and report at the colleges where the seat is allotted on or before the stipulated date.
