Guru Pournami

Guru Pournami

Guru Brahma gurur Vishnuh,
Gurur dhevo Maheswarah,
Gurussaakshaath Parabrahma,
Thasmai Shri Gurave namah

Vyasa Purnima (Veda Vyas Poornima) or G
uru Pournami is one of the most auspicious purnima days as per the Hinduism. Some scriptures described that on Ashada Poornima day,Vyasa Sage the presenter of Chaturvedas (four Vedas), Astadasha Puranas (18 Puranas) and the ithihas Mahabharata completed writing and editing the compilations of Chaturveds. Thus Ashada Purnima is also called as Vyas Poornima. Vyas Purnima is also observed as Guru Pournami because Veda Vyas Bhagawan is considered as the Aadi Guru (first teacher). During Vyasa Jayanthi people worship Veda Vyas along with Guru parampara and Lord Sri Krishna. In some regions, the day is also celebrated as Guru Puja.

Vyasa Purnima – Chautur Mas Vrata – Shiva Shayanotsava Vratam:

In some sects, on Vyasa Purnima is considered as the beginning of Chaturmas vrata. During the four holy months in Hinduism, Lord Vishnu goes into cosmic sleep. Some Shaiva sects observe Vyasa Jayanthi as the Shiva Shayanotsav Vrata arambham. It marks the first day of Shiva Shayanotsav Vratam. On this day, Shiva Dolotsav is also celebrated.
In Veda Vyasa temple at Basar where Goddess Gnana Saraswati Devi temple is located, Vyasa Pournami celebrations are held with utmost devotion.

Merits of Observing Vyasa Purnima – Vyasa Jayanthi Phal Stuthi:

Worshipping Veda Vyasa bhagwan and observing Vyas Purnima with reverence is highly meritorious. The one who donates Vishnu Purana on Ashada Purnima would attain salvation and reaches Vaikuntam, the Vishnu lokam, after the death. Reciting the stotra of Veda Vyasa on Vyas Pournami routes the devotee to Brahmatva (salvation). Lord Shiridi Saibaba said that Guru Purnima is the compulsary festival that his devotees should celebrate.
Saint of Shirdi - Shri Sai Baba - Saguna Brahma - Guru:
The saint of Shirdi recognized and emphasized the beauty of a Guru-guided life. Shri Sai Baba of Shirdi is the Guru incarnate to live on this earth in the late part of last century and early part of this century. Shri Sai Baba gave tremendous importance to the adoption of the Guru in one's spiritual "Sadhana"(pursuit). With an innate compassion Shri Sai Baba often declared -"I am your savior, not only from the weight of sin, but from the weight of care and misery". "Guru is all the Gods", said the Saint of Shirdi. Moreover, the Baba declared reassuringly though as the all pervading Guru he would naturally expect complete surrender, obedience and loyalty, he promised that through his supreme powers he would extend complete protection to those who put their implicit faith in him.
Has Shri Sai Baba qualified to be a Guru?
Not only did the Saint of Shirdi perform his duties of Guruship during his life, but was able to establish a lasting Guru-parampara(successors of Guru's) through his vision and foresight.
Shri Sai Baba was not content to transfer his messiahship to his descendants. In the last years of his life, he said to his devotees with a mother's solicitude, "Do not grieve when my body passes away. My tomb will live and move and speak with all those who make me their sole refuge." Sai Baba's promise is abundantly fulfilled even to-day. Millions of devotees flock to his Samadhi regularly to seek his blessings. Through decades of void there comes echoing down the years the gracious message- " I am beside you always".
Celebration of Guru Poornima Day in Shirdi
The celebration of Guru Poornima began in Shirdi around 1908. One day Shri Baba told his disciple Shri Dada Kelkar, "Do you know this day is the day to approach Gurus? Bring your worship articles". Then Shri Kelkar and his friends looked up the calendar and found that the day was Guru Poornima day. They started worshipping Shri Sai Baba as their Guru, and that practice has continued till today not only in Shirdi but all over the world where prayers are offered to Shri Sai.
How does one celebrate Guru Poornima?
Guru Poornima is celebrated by devotees by performing Guru Pooja(offering prayers to the Guru) to our Lord Shri Sai Baba. Each Sai Devotee can either perform the Sai Guru Pooja(prayer) at home or attend a Sai Guru Pooja or sponsor a Sai Guru Pooja being performed at a Sai temple by offering donation or other articles used in Pooja(Pooja samagri).
One can attend a bhajan or visit a Sai Mandir where ever possible. For those of us who do not have the fortune of visiting a Sai temple or attending a Bhajan, this web site organization has teamed with Sai temples from various areas to help devotees participate in Sai Guru Pooja by sponsoring Guru Pooja. For those who are unable to do so, humming songs about Sai or repeating Sai slokams or SaiNama would be a good way to spend Guru Poornima day.
The Guru's Advice
Swami Sivananda recommends: "Wake up at Brahmamuhurta (at 4 a.m.) on this most holy day. Meditate on the lotus feet of your Guru. Mentally pray to him for his Grace, through which alone you can attain Self-realisation. Do vigorous Japa and meditate in the early morning hours.
"After bath, worship the lotus feet of your Guru, or his image or picture with flowers, fruits, incense and camphor. Fast or take only milk and fruits the whole day.
In the afternoon, sit with other devotees of your Guru and discuss with them the glories and teachings of your Guru.
"Alternatively, you may observe the vow of silence and study the books or writings of your Guru, or mentally reflect upon his teachings. Take fresh resolves on this holy day, to tread the spiritual path in accordance with the precepts of your Guru.
"At night, assemble again with other devotees, and sing the Names of the Lord and the glories of your Guru. The best form of worship of the Guru is to follow his teachings, to shine as the very embodiment of his teachings, and to propagate his glory and his message."

Guru Pournami

Ash wants French award put off after blasts

Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai, who was to receive an honour from the French government in New Delhi on Wednesday, requested officials to postpone the ceremony in the wake of the Mumbai blasts. The actress also maintained a minute's silence to mourn the deaths.
"Thank you all for being here. The current situation has really disturbed and shocked all of us. I thank the French embassy for being supportive and considering the sensitivity of the situation. They have been kind to consider me and my family's request to postpone the celebration till another time. We as Indians can't go ahead and celebrate in such a situation," Aishwarya told reporters at the event.
Mumbai was hit by three blasts that left at least 20 people dead and over 100 injured on Wednesday evening.

The event for honouring Aishwarya with "Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters" was being held in New Delhi, but her heart was with those affected by the tragedy.
"The terrible blasts have shook us, but we shall stand strong. They (terrorists) should get it straight that we won't let them succeed. You cannot break us, we all believe in deep strong Indian spirit. You will not get the better of us. God bless us and Jai Hind," added Aishwarya, who was accompanied by her actor-husband Abhishek Bachchan.
The 37-year-old's appearance was highly anticipated as it was her second public outing ever since the announcement of her pregnancy. She did not disappoint by being away from shutterbugs, and looked extremely graceful in a yellow and parrot green sari, with the natural glow of an expectant mother.
French Ambassdor Jerome Bonnafont said: "The terrible series of blast has shocked all of us. It seems the time is not right. I pay my condolence and want the Indian people to know that the government of France is with them."

Tamil movie 'Ko' to be remade in Hindi

Chennai: The hugely successful K V Anand-directed Tamil movie 'Ko' is set for a remake in Bollywood and one among the heartthrobs Ranbir Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor is tipped to play the role enacted by Jeeva in
the original.
'Ko' was a blockbuster and the director is presently in discussions about the Bollywood project, says actor Ajmal who played a scheming Vasanthan Perumal, Jeeva's friend in the movie.
It was rumoured that Akshay Kumar was to play Jeeva's role. "But it is Ranbir or Shahid who are likely to enact that role," he told PTI.
Ajmal, who shot to fame playing the role of an anti-hero in the Tamil movie 'Anjathey', says his role in 'Ko' is what actors "dream to do" and if everything goes well, he might get a chance to do the Bollywood version also.
"As I said, everything is in discussion stage." Anand had seen Ajmal's shots in 'Thiru Thiru Thuru Thuru'
and 'Anjathey' and impressed, signed him on for the movie.
"He wanted me to play the role of Jeeva's friend. I was totally focused on my character," says Ajmal, who as a student leader gets elected and becomes Chief Minister in the movie, a seemingly goody-goody character whose real intentions are revealed only in the latter half and catches viewers unawares.
'Ko' has stunning music numbers composed by Harris Jayaraj and the songs are still topping charts even two months after the film's release, especially the foot-tapping 'Ennamo Aedho..'.
Ajmal himself is featured only in two songs, including the fast number 'Aga Naga'. It does not bother him that there are only two out of six songs picturised on him. "My role is different," he says.

Mahesh Bhatt announces 'Jannat 2'

New Delhi: It is the era of sequels and after the recent success of 'Murder 2', filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt has announced the sequel to the Emraan Hashmi-Sonal Chauhan starrer 'Jannat'.
Bhatt is not repeating the original cast from the 2008 film and has roped in Kunal Khemu and Amrita Puri for 'Jannat 2'.
"Jannat 2: When dreams become nightmares. Starring Kunal Khemu and Amrita Puri. Directed by Vishal Mahadkar. Writer: Upendra Sidhaye," Bhatt tweeted today.

Khemu was last seen in 'Golmaal 3', while Amrita made her Bollywood debut with 'Aisha' last year.
Beside the cast, Bhatt has replaced the director as well. Kunal Deshmukh directed 'Jannat' and reports suggested last year that he was working on a concept based on the match fixing scandal in Pakistan for the sequel.

No to reality shows as Hindi is poor: Katrina

New Delhi: Half of Bollywood including A-listers like Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar are busy hosting reality shows, but actress Katrina Kaif says she won't try her hand there as her Hindi is poor.
Despite starring in a number of Hindi films, the British Indian actress is still not very comfortable with the language.
"I do not take up hosting reality shows as my Hindi is not good, that might become a problem. I am also busy with my movie projects as I do 2-3 of them a year," Katrina said in reply to a fan's question while chatting on Airtel Talk2me.

"I will definitely try if I get any chance," she added.
The fan asked her why hasn't she applied for an Indian citizenship and Katrina said, "This is a slightly difficult task. All my sisters stay in London. Lets see what happens... we will try."
When a police officer from Nagaland told the 26-year-old actress that she "looks good with Salman Khan", Katrina said, "Yes, he is a good friend of mine."

Dabangg 2 to begin in January 2012

Dabangg 2 will roll not before early January 2012. There were reports that Salman is in a rush to begin work on the project, however Arbaaz who's directing for the first time is in no hurry to begin the film.

Salman is on his way of completing his bro-in-law's Bodyguard and then will start Kabir Khan's Ek Tha Tiger. He doesn't want to juggle too many films together.

A source close to the sequel reveals, "Arbaaz will start the Dabangg sequel in early 2012. Since he's directing it, there are more responsibilities on him than the last time, and he doesn't want to rush in unprepared. The sequel has to match upto Dabangg, and to ensure that, the director has to prep a lot.

The source adds, "Dabangg 2 will be a continuation of the first. The film will pick up where it ended and Salman, Sonakshi, Sonu Sood will make an appearance in the part 2 as well. Rest of the cast is being worked out. Arbaaz has got the first draft and he will start working on it. "

Arbaaz confirms, "Yes, the sequel will start early next year. Salman will be giving the requisite dates. It's too soon to comment on anything else."

Waiting for the right film: Pooja Chopra

Pooja Chopra's story, starting from her early days to being 2009 Femina Miss India and going on to win the "Beauty with a Purpose" award in Miss World 2009 for her project " Nanhi Kali", followed by a host of titles and a battery of endorsements, seems straight out of a fairytale.

But scratch the surface and you'll know the girl has set her sights straight and knows where she is headed. Excerpts from an interview.

You were adjudged 2009 Femina Miss India- Miss World, how did it start?
Mmm! I was born in Calcutta and raised in Pune, as destiny would have it, I was crowned the Miss India East of 2009 and what followed was the Pantaloon Femina Miss India 2009. Everything happened in a jiffy, but I knew that I had to take charge. And I was the only girl to win eight titles all in just one year.

Who has been your inspiration?
It's my mom. If it was not for my mother's support I would not have been here today.

After Miss India, is it acting next?
To be honest I was not too sure about acting but I wish to thank Anupam Kher for having sponsored my acting course in his reputed institute and teaching me the nuances of acting. And now I feel acting is my calling and it's all what I want to do.

Any offers?
For a Miss India to get offers is no big deal, it's bound to happen to every girl who wears the crown but what is important is the choice of films. It's very important to take the right decisions in an actor's career, and since I plan to stay here for years to come, I have my eyes set on the best. I won't settle for anything less.

Would you like to act in Telugu cinema?
Of course, I would love to do Telugu cinema. For me it's the story, the director and my role that would matter, not the language. Look what an impetus the South has given to former Miss Indias like Ashiwarya Rai Bachchan and Priyanka Chopra. I too would most willingly want to join the brigade.

Maharashtra ATS going through CCTV footage

2011-07-15
Mumbai: The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad probing the serial blasts in the city, is sifting through the CCTVs installed near the blast sites, particularly the footages at the Opera House which may give some vital clues, an ATS official said on Thursday night.
"We are going through all the CCTV footages obtained from the three blast sites. While going through the footage obtained at Opera House, we have seen suspicious behaviour of some people," he said.
"But until we question them or record their statement, we cannot say anything about their involvement. We are calling all those people seen in various footages to get the clear picture of the incident or any details that may help us in the probe," he said.

Sathya Sai Baba's mahasamadhi unveiled in Puttaparthi

Puttaparthi:  Sri Sathya Sai Baba's mahasamadhi was unveiled in Prasanthi Nilayam ashram in Puttaparthi today. The mahasamadhi is located in the Sai Kulwant Hall of the ashram, where Sai Baba used to give darshan to his devotees. It is a rectangular, white marble edifice - 9 ft long, 6 ft wide and 2 ft 2 inches high. It has been constructed just above where Sai Baba was laid to rest after his demise on April 24.

Baba's devotees have gathered in Puttaparthi in large numbers for darshan of the mahasamadhi.

The Sathya Sai Central Trust, which manages the affairs of Sai Baba's spiritual empire, had announced that the mahasamadhi would be built in a grand and befitting manner.

Meanwhile, investigations are on into the activities of the Sathya Sai Trust after Rs. 35 lakhs were seized in cash from an ashram vehicle last month. The trust has, however, refuted any wrongdoings and has said that the cash seized was money given by a devotee for the construction of the mahasamadhi - a memorial for Sai Baba. It maintains that financial transparency is being strictly followed while running the body.

UNSC, world leaders slam terror strike in Mumbai

United Nations: UN Security Council and world leaders have strongly condemned the Mumbai serial blasts that killed 21 people and injured 141, saying terror acts are "criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation."
Terror revisits Mumbai, 21 killed in serial blasts
UN chief Ban Ki-moon joined countries across the world including the US, Russia, the UK, France, the UAE and Pakistan in condemning the terror strike in India's commercial hub.
"The members of the Security Council reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security, and that any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation," said a statement read out by Peter Wittig, Germany's ambassador to the UN and current Council president.
The council expressed its deep sympathy and sincere condolences to the victims of these "heinous acts" and to their families, and to the people and Government of India.
A statement from the office of the UN chief said: "The Secretary-General (Ban) condemns the attacks that have killed and injured many in Mumbai.
"No cause or grievance can justify indiscriminate violence against civilians. The Secretary-General expresses his solidarity with the Government and people of India, and extends his sincere condolences to the families of the victims," it added.
In Washington, US President Barack Obama condemned as "outrageous" the attacks in Mumbai and offered support to bring the perpetrators of the "terrible crimes to justice".
"I strongly condemn the outrageous attacks in Mumbai," Obama said in a statement.

PSLV to put GSAT-12 in orbit on Friday

Countdown begins at 11.48 a.m. on Wednesday
With the 53-hour countdown for the launch of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C17) commencing at 11.48 a.m. on Wednesday, the stage is set for the rocket's lift-off from Sriharikota at 4.48 p.m. on Friday.
The PSLV-C17 will put in orbit communication satellite GSAT-12, which weighs 1,410 kg. It is a more powerful version of the standard PSLV, called PSLV-XL that will put the satellite in orbit after a 20-minute flight.
“The countdown is going on satisfactorily,” said P.S. Veeraraghavan, Director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) in Thiruvananthapuram, from Sriharikota on Wednesday. The launch window is between 4.48 p.m. and 5.08 p.m. “We will use the earliest opportunity” at 4.48 p.m. for the rocket's ignition, he said. The four-stage PSLV was built by the VSSC.
This is the second time that a powerful PSLV-XL version will lift off from the second launch pad at Sriharikota. It was earlier used to put Chandrayaan-1 into orbit on October 22, 2008. While the six strap-on booster motors of the standard version of the PSLV carry a total of nine tonnes of solid propellants, the strap-on motors in the XL version are powered by a total of 12 tonnes of fuel.
“This is [also] the second time that a PSLV is being used to put a satellite in a geo-synchronous transfer orbit (GTO),” said Mr. Veeraraghavan. It was earlier used on September 12, 2002 to put Kalpana, a weather satellite, in GTO.
Raising the apogee
In fact, the PSLV-C17 will put GSAT-12 in a sub-GTO with a perigee (nearest point to the earth) of 284 km and an apogee (farthest point from the earth) of 21,000 km. After it is put in a sub-GTO, commands will be given to the liquid apogee motor (LAM) on board the satellite to boost the apogee to 36,000 km. After it is done, commands will be given to boost the perigee from 284 km to 36,000 km.
“For the first time, in our communication satellites, we are raising the apogee from 21,000 km to 36,000 km in two stages. This is a crucial manoeuvre. To raise the apogee, you have to fire the LAM when the satellite is in its perigee. So the LAM firing is a challenge,” said a satellite technologist of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The satellite will thus reach a circular geo-stationary orbit of 36,000 km.
Advanced mission computer
“A significant feature of the PSLV-C17,” said Mr. Veeraraghavan, “is that it will use an advanced mission computer with indigenous processors. The ISRO built the computer. We also built our own processors. The advanced mission computer will be used for navigation, guidance and controlling” the rocket. The ISRO earlier used imported processor chips in the PSLV missions. In the PSLV-C12 mission in 2009, it used one chain of imported processors and another chain of indigenous processors. “In this mission, both the prime and the redundant chains have indigenous processors,” Mr. Veeraraghavan said.
The GSAT-12, with 12 extended C-band transponders, will be used for tele-medicine, tele-education, telephone and various other communication purposes.
This is the 19th PSLV mission, out of which 17 have been successful in a row. The PSLV-C17 weighs 310 tonnes and is 44 metres tall.
