Sai trust submits its report to AP govt

Date : Jul 12th, 2011

Hyderabad: The Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust, which manages the affairs of late Sathya Sai Baba’s spiritual empire on Monday, submitted a detailed report to the Andhra Pradesh government on its functioning as well as financial details.
Responding to the government’s notice, the trust submitted the report to endowments secretary K.V. Ramnachari.
The report contains details of the trust’s finances, its activities, revenues, institutions run by it, members of the trust, their addresses and their professions.
The trust has also reportedly provided details of the trust’s objectives, its day-to-day functioning, details of the officials who run the trust and various institutions, assets, income and expenditure.
The report also contains details of the trust’s bank accounts, the subsidies given by the central government, exemptions from income tax regulations and also the names and other details of its auditors.
Officials said the government would evaluate the report before taking a decision on the demands from a section of devotees to take over the trust or at least set up a mechanism to monitor the trust.
It was on June 27 that the government had asked the trust to submit the report in 10 days. The move came amid allegations that the trust members are involved in financial irregularities.
It is for the first time in nearly four decades that the government intervened in the affairs of the trust. The trustees were facing allegations of irregularities after Sathya Sai Baba’s demise on April 24.
Anantapur police had last month seized Rs.35 lakh from a car and arrested three people, who revealed that they were transporting the cash from Baba’s ashram in Puttaparthi to Bangalore on the directions of two trust members.
Though the trust has claimed that the money was donated by some devotees for building Sathya Sai Baba’s samadhi, the police are continuing the probe amid allegations that huge cash and valuables were shifted out of the ashram.

New Delhi: A 25-year-old IAS aspirant who sat for an examination for selection of Assistant Central Intelligence Officer in place of his friend for a fee of Rs.1 lakh has been arrested, police said on Monday.

Kalka Mail accident: death toll rises to 67

Date : Jul 12th, 2011
A special train that was dispatched to carry the injured passengers from the Howrah-Delhi Kalka Mail derailment site in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday, reached New Delhi on Monday morning, ending the horrific ordeal. Doctors with medical supplies received over 165 passengers on the platform.
The Centre has announced compensation packages for families of all the casualties and the injured.
Minister of State for Railways KH Muniyappa said, “It’s an unfortunate incident; the Prime Minister has announced compensation for victims.”
“Rs 5 lakh for family of the deceased, Rs 1 lakh for major injuries and Rs 25000 for simple injuries keeping track of rescue operations,” added Muniyappa.
The train derailed in Uttar Pradesh leaving over 67 passengers dead and about 250 injured, touting it to be the worst accident of this year. The train was reportedly travelling at a speed of 108 Km/Hr when it derailed near Fatehpur Malwan railway station at 12.20 pm.
The Delhi-Howrah route still remains disrupted and seven trains stand cancelled.
The impact was such that 13 bogies were thrown off the tracks, many on top of others, which left them badly mangled.
The train had 1,200 passengers on board when the incident took place leaving scores trapped inside.
The first helping hand came from the locals as soon as the police reached the accident spot.
Many passengers broke the the glass windows of the 3 AC tier coaches to free themselves.
Local sources confirmed that gas cutters were used to cut through the twisted mass of iron that many mangled bogies had become.
Passengers were shocked and dazed with what their train journey had become. Those who were rescued feared for their fellow travellers who were still trapped inside.
“People are still inside we can hear their voices,” said a rescued passenger.
A while after the accident took place, the Army joined in the rescue operations, sending medical teams and deploying Chetak helicopters for emergency evacuations. A specialised team of National Disaster Relief Force, also, rushed to the accident spot.
Uttar Pradesh Minister of State for Railways Mukul Roy said that an enquiry had been set up to look into the cause of the accident.
The question is what caused the worst train accident of the year so far.
Preliminary reports suggest the driver may have applied emergency brakes and at a speed of 108 km per hour, it proved fatal.
But many questions remain to be answered:
- The train was moving within the speed limits and with Malwa not as a scheduled stop, what forced the driver to apply the emergency brake?
- Experts say sudden application of emergency brakes don’t really lead to derailments, so does it mean the air brakes of other bogies failed?
- Or were the tracks damaged?
The mishap that took place on Sunday also raises questions over the safety record of the railways. Over 90 accidents have taken place in the last 12 months, which is not a record the world’s largest rail network can be proud of.

U.P. train accident: Death toll rises to 53; rescue operations on

Date : Jul 11th, 2011
Fatehpur: The death toll in the Sunday’s train accident near the Malwan station on the Howrah-Delhi Grand Chord in Fatehpur district went up to 53 with 15 more bodies, including that of a Swedish national, being recovered from the mangled compartments of the ill-fated Delhi-bound Kalka Mail.
“53 bodies, including that of a Swedish national, have been recovered so far. About 250 are undergoing treatment at a hospital here,” Fatehpur SP Ram Bharose said, adding those who were seriously injured have been referred to Kanpur.
Mr. Bharose said the Swedish national has been identified as Wick from the statement of his injured compatriot Oscar, who was also travelling with him.
There is one more passenger from Sweden, who is reportedly missing, the SP said, quoting Oscar.
The derailment took place at 12.20 PM yesterday when the train from Howrah reached near Malwa station, nearly 120 kms from Lucknow. The train was moving at a speed of 108 km/hour.
Rescue operations continued throughout the night to extricate the trapped passengers and bodies from the damaged AC and other compartments.
“By tomorrow morning, the Howrah-Delhi route should be cleared off,” Railway Board Chairman Vinay Mittal said, adding that an inquiry by the Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety (Lucknow) Prashant Kumar has been ordered.
No fault in the track
Mr. Mittal said there was no fault in the track and the cabinmen had told him that when the train was close to pole number 927/23, its engine started shaking and emitting smoke, soon after which the mishap took place.
Out of the 53 bodies, 21 have been identified, Mr. Bharose said.
According to preliminary investigations, the signals were functioning normally and the fish plates on the tracks were intact, Mr. Mittal said.
While some of the bogies had toppled, others were turned into a mangled heap of metal. Gas cutters and other equipment were used to slice through the metal in the AC and other coaches to rescue the trapped passengers.
On July 7, the Mathura—Chhapra Express had rammed into a bus carrying a marriage party at the Adhurpur unmanned railway crossing Kanshiram Nagar, about 250 km from Lucknow, leaving 38 bus passengers dead.
